What is Content Marketing?
Content Marketing simply means creating awesome content for the purpose of getting, and keeping customers. “Content” includes any media such as articles, tutorials, images and graphics, videos, resources, etc.
How do you know what type of content to create?
The first step is to figure out what keywords you want to be found under. When someone does a Google search for whatever it is you offer, what terms and keywords would they enter into the search query to find you?
The second step is to determine what type of content those types of people would want to see when Google gives them results. Are they looking for video tutorials? If so, then create some awesome YouTube videos, put them on your website, and say something about them. Are they looking for pricing and details of your products or services? Then write that content.
Are there general rules to follow when creating content?
There’s no “one-size-fits-all” solution to creating great content. However, there are some general rules or principles to follow in order to get the best results. You need to ask yourself the following questions.
Is it relevant? If you want to be found by someone who’s doing a Google Search because they’re looking to buy a new couch, then make sure your content fits their needs. They might want to see pictures of your couches, descriptions, pricing, etc. Make sure your content is relevant.
Is it good? Don’t just slap a couple of sentences together about how you sell couches. Put some thought and effort into creating good content that’s well written, simple to understand, and easy to read.
Is it useful? Create your content in such a way that when visitors see it, they feel that there is no real need to look anywhere else. If your content leaves them asking questions, then they will do another Google search to find the answers… and guess what – Google knows if someone leaves your site to look for something better.
Is it unique? Don’t copy someone else’s content! A lot of people try to cut corners by going to content aggregators that distribute the same content to 50 other people in your industry, or by looking at their competition and copying what they said. This will just end up working against you. There are no corners to cut – produce original, unique content. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel (there are only so many ways to say that you sell couches) but make sure that your content is presented in a way that’s unique to your company.
Is it sharable? Creating sharable content doesn’t only mean that your page is set up with social buttons; it means creating content that’s so good and helpful that visitors would feel compelled to share it with their friends. Let your visitors do the marketing for you!
Again, these are just general rules and principles to follow. Don’t box yourself in to creating just one type of content – have fun! After you create your content, then it’s time to make sure it’s formatted correctly with On Page SEO.
